A Call to Action to Save Heirloom Cacao in the Race to Save the World’s Greatest Food

November 24, 2014

Chocolate Lovers, we invite you to join the conversation. There has never been a more critical time for preserving the world’s heirloom seeds and organic foods. It is up to chocolate lovers to preserve heirloom cacao by choosing well-sourced organic chocolate.

As conscious consumers, it is important that we understand the privilege and responsibility of choosing organic chocolate, so please share this blog-post on social media and help spread the message.

The Race to Save the World’s Chocolate” … begins now! – Mother Jones.

The Fine Chocolate Industry Association Issues a Call to Action to Save Heirloom Cacao, “Hybrid cacao is not our only option in the fight against global degradation of cacao. Numerous specialty chocolate manufacturers and chocolatiers whose livelihood depends on fine-flavored cocoa have come together to work with local farmers on every continent to preserve heirloom cacao.”

At Sacred Chocolate we consider the education and preservation of heirloom cacao seeds an integral part of our mission. We believe that the best way to inspire you to make better choices is to show you why we love the cacao fruit so much… And it all starts with ‘planting the right seeds!’

Do you love cacao? Do you believe in growing your own food and preserving life for the next generation? We would love to hear from you in the comments section below.

Here’s some timely inspiration from Lord Cacao:

In the recently released film Origins,’  David Wolfe shares his philosophy on sustainability.

“Nature has always guided us and can guide us into the future. All that we have to do is open up our intuition and instincts. One move corrects everything. And that’s the return to the sacred. Nature is sacred. Plants and trees are sacred. That one step of reverence for all life can correct so many imbalances in our thoughts, words, and deeds. Simply moving forward into the future with reverence can create sustainability.”  David Wolfe.

CACAO SEEDS ARE A  “SUPER FRUIT”

In the film ‘Origins,’ Scott A. Murray spoke about agro-ecology as an advocate for sustainable agriculture and heirloom seeds:

“Heirloom seeds are old fashioned, open-pollinated seeds that were kept by men for many generations because of their unique flavour and they were very helpful for farmers. Now in our modern times, we have genetically modified seeds… Those seeds are only produced ‘to have the effect of benefitting from not being killed the chemicals that are being sprayed on them’ but what are they doing for our health?” –  Scott A. Murray

WHAT IS HEIRLOOM CACAO?

“Heirloom cacao are the diamonds of cacao (cacao trees and beans) endowed with a combination of historic, cultural, botanical, geographical, and most importantly flavor value. Heirloom beans have terrific overall balance – complex and intense, long and pleasant – and unique flavor worthy of preservation, protection, and propagation. Heirloom does not mean the beans are present or preserved in the collections, old, or wild.” – The Fine Chocolate Industry Organization

The Washington Post reported: “Chocolate deficits, whereby farmers produce less cocoa than the world eats, are becoming the norm.” In 2013, the world consumed about 70,000 metric tons more cocoa than it produced.
